About

I manage a small data science team for a Series B startup (<30 people) and can help you learn about data science products, what makes good analysis/analytics great, applying machine learning beyond pure model building, managing realtime models, moving to and thriving in a startup, and lastly how to get into or move up in Data Science (hint: it's not too late).

What got me to where I am today isn't your typical data science journey. I took turns in sales, engineering, technology and analytics while trying various aspects of insurance industries; all with the goal to grasp the big picture and day-to-day application of data science. That journey helped me to understand data science in a broader context. Today, my career and perspective most closely matches that of a data science generalist and I agree fondly with the saying "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but is still better than a master of one."

Within so much change during 7 years in data, one thing has been constant: mentoring teammates and junior coworkers. I have mentored 7 junior data scientists, analysts and non DS teammates and have helped 4 grow upward or enter into tech and DS roles. I have been mentored by 3 different data science managers. I have been fortunate to manage a larger team of 10 to support a DS community as well and continue to mentor/connect folks who have moved companies or grown beyond my role.

All of this to say - my goal is to help you learn more about data science and analytics and grow professionally and personally. We'll do that together by discussing topics openly, working through problems, applying solutions and keeping on track with weekly takeaways and monthly goals.

I hope I get the chance to learn from you and help you grow.

Ian

My goal of the mentorship was to get a head start in the transition from Data Analytics to Data Science. From Ian, I got that and more! Ian helped me create a customized curriculum with books and online courses based on my current knowledge, and also assisted me in defining and starting my Machine Learning project, which I had been struggling with. Finally, after multiple months of mentoring, I decided to apply for an online Data Science Master's program at one of the prestigious US universities, where I got accepted thanks to Ian's guidance and support. I cannot recommend Ian enough!

Have really enjoyed working with Ian. At the start of the mentorship, Ian drew up a plan of how to get me to my expected goal. He has been available for questions, reviewing progress, checking in when needed - all things you’d want from a mentor. He’s very patient and understanding and very knowledgeable in this field.

Ian is a gem of a mentor, he is very positive and supportive yet very honest with his feedback which is essential to improve and move forward. I'm trying to break into a new sector of data analytics and Ian has really gone the extra mile to ensure I stay motivated and focused on the right things to maximise my chances of getting a data analyst job. I'm really grateful to have found him and to have him working with me. Highly recommended!
