About

I manage a small data science team for a startup (<40 people) and can help you learn about data science products, what makes a good analysis great, applying machine learning beyond pure model building, managing realtime models, moving to and thriving in a startup, and lastly how to get into or move up in Data Science (hint: it's not too late).

Like most, my journey into data science was far from typical. I took turns in sales, engineering, technology and analytics while trying various aspects of insurance industries; all with the goal to grasp the big picture and day-to-day application of data science. That experience helped me to understand data science in a broader context. Today, my career and perspective matches that of a data science generalist and I agree fondly with the saying "a jack of all trades is a master of none, but is still better than a master of one."

Within so much change during 7+ years in data, one thing has been constant: mentoring teammates. I have mentored 8 junior data scientists, analysts and non DS teammates and have helped 5 grow upward or enter into tech and DS roles. I've witnessed this get tougher in today's job market. I have been mentored by 3 data science managers so I know what it's like in your shoes. I have been fortunate to manage a larger team of 10 to support a DS community as well and continue to mentor/connect folks who have moved companies or grown beyond my role.

All of this to say - my goal is to help you learn more about data science and analytics and grow professionally and personally. We'll do that together by discussing topics openly, working through problems, applying solutions and keeping on track with weekly takeaways and monthly goals.

We can work together in 3 ways - individual sessions, a hands-on Standard Mentorship or a less hands on Lite version and I always start mentorships with a free introductory call we can get to know each other more.

I hope I get the chance to help you grow.

He is well worth it. His guidance helped. I landed a role using feedback from my first session. I was fortunate and landed it only after 3 months of our session, but I had already done much of the transition work prior. I finished another session on guidance on how to prep for my new role. Your mentor should take the time to really understand your scenario, review your documents, and answer your specific questions. Ian did just this.

I am so grateful and happy with Ian's professional mentorship. There were many concepts that were difficult to understand for me and Ian always had the patience, knowledge, and kindness to explain thoroughly. Thank you, Ian!
