Greetings!
My name is Joe Waugh, and I am a Sr. Machine Learning Engineer at ThredUp.
My expertise lies in data science, data engineering, customer analytics, and the realms of machine learning and deep learning. Leading the technical development of initiatives like fraud detection platforms and computer vision applications at FedEx has been a rewarding part of my journey. I've had the privilege of mentoring individuals across analytics, data engineering, and machine learning domains, guiding them toward landing roles in data science.
As a mentor, I prioritize building a solid relationship with my mentees and offering unwavering support tailored to their career goals. I believe in a structured approach, working backward from your aspirations to craft a mentoring plan.
Here's what I can assist you with:
- Transitioning to big tech firms
- Roles in analytics, data science, or ML
- Polishing your resume, LinkedIn, or online portfolio
- Interview preparation
- Advancing in your current role
Let's have an introductory call to see if we're a good fit for a mentorship. I'm eager to help you grow in your journey!

Joe was instrumental in helping me identify what was holding me back during previous attempts to break into a career in data. Thanks to his guidance, I have created a resume and LinkedIn profile that showcase my value to employers, built a professional GitHub page, felt prepared for technical interviews at top companies, and secured multiple interviews for DS and DE roles in my target industry. As a mentor, Joe was always goal-driven, honest, responsive, and helpful, and I would recommend him to anyone seeking one-on-one guidance to land a career in data.

Joe is a great mentor. He is very personable, responsive, punctual, and invested in helping you achieve your goals. He is very prompt with his replies and flexible with his schedule. There were a couple of times when our meetings ran over the time limit and he was very accommodating and didn't rush me off of the call. The small things he does like this show that he is genuinely invested in the success of his mentees. Also, Joe did a good job at helping me achieve my goals while keeping realistic expectations of the future. He was both encouraging and grounded in reality. Whenever Joe offered me advice he was very understanding of my personal goals and wasn't too rigid in me following his exact plan. This gave me the flexibility to both execute my personal goals and take his advice as I needed it. I believe this is exactly how a mentorship should be. Overall, it was clear Joe was very knowledgeable about the field of data science and was well equipped with both strategies and resources to help me get a job in the field. He primarily helped me with the following areas: improving my resume, improving my LinkedIn, networking strategies, technical interview prep, project advice, directing me to useful resources, and generally improving areas of weakness in my application. I would definitely recommend him. If you choose to take mentorship with Joe you will get exactly what he advertises.

I had a brief yet substantial experience with Joe, a data scientist who obtained his MS at Georgia Tech, one of the schools I'm considering. We focused on my goals, training needs, and career possibilities, and Joe's recommendations were spot on. He had done thorough research beforehand, making the meeting efficient and time well-spent. Joe's expertise in both academia and industry was impressive, which proved valuable as I navigate the challenges of balancing academic and professional experience while upskilling.
