About

Hi, I’m Will. I’ve spent more than 20 years in cybersecurity, working across detection engineering, incident response, threat intelligence, and security engineering. I’ve done that at Fortune 100 companies and at startups, including Datadog and Stripe. Along the way I’ve published independent threat research, worked on security research teams, and earned four patents. Today I’m at Databricks, where I manage the threat intelligence and threat hunting teams.

Very few mentors here focus on cyber threat intelligence or detection engineering, and those are the two areas I care about most. Maybe you’re trying to break into CTI, or you want to learn what good detection engineering actually looks like. Maybe you’re working out how to turn intel into detections your SOC can act on. Whatever it is, I’d love to dig into it with you.

I can also help with:
- Building a career in security: which roles exist, how to choose between them, and how to interview well
- Making the jump to staff engineer: what changes, and what nobody tells you beforehand
- Working at startups: the pace, the ambiguity, and whether it’s the right fit for you
- Life transitions around work: including being a working parent, which I’ve had to learn the hard way
- General software engineering: design, code, and the questions you’d feel silly asking at work

My approach is simple. I bring real passion for this work, and I’m open about my own stumbles. I’d rather tell you what didn’t work for me than pretend I had it all figured out. Together we’ll pinpoint the skills that will move you forward and make a plan to build them.

If any of that sounds useful, reach out. I’m glad you’re here.
