Why did you decide to become a mentor?

I decided to become a mentor because I genuinely enjoy helping others navigate the challenges of building a successful career in Data Science. Having worked at companies like Google, Pinterest, Atlassian, Dropbox, and eBay, I've experienced firsthand how competitive and demanding the industry can be, especially when preparing for technical interviews or transitioning into more senior roles. Over the years, I've realized that success in Data Science isn't just about technical expertise; it's also about structured problem-solving, effective communication, and knowing how to translate analytical insights into business impact. I wanted to share these lessons and help others avoid some of the challenges I encountered along the way. When I started mentoring, my primary goal was to make high-quality, personalized career guidance more accessible. What I didn't fully anticipate was how rewarding the experience would be for me as well. Working with mentees from different backgrounds has challenged me to become a better communicator, sharpened my own technical understanding, and exposed me to fresh perspectives. There's something incredibly fulfilling about watching someone gain confidence, overcome an interview challenge, or make meaningful progress toward their career goals. Mentoring has become more than just an opportunity to share knowledge; it's a way for me to continuously learn, give back to the Data Science community, and make a tangible difference in someone's professional journey.

How did you get your career start?

My journey into Data Science was driven by a strong interest in mathematics, statistics, and using data to solve real-world problems. Early in my career, I realized that what excited me most wasn't simply building models or analyzing datasets, but understanding how data could influence decisions and create meaningful business impact. Breaking into the field required continuous learning, developing strong technical foundations, and understanding how to apply analytical thinking to practical business challenges. Over time, I had the opportunity to work with organizations such as American Express, eBay, Google, Dropbox, Pinterest, and Atlassian, where I gained exposure to different industries, large-scale data problems, and increasingly complex analytical challenges. One of the most important lessons from my career has been that technical skills alone aren't enough to succeed in Data Science. Learning how to communicate insights, influence stakeholders, navigate ambiguity, and connect analytical work to business outcomes has been equally important. I've also learned tremendously from talented colleagues and leaders who challenged my thinking and helped me develop a more strategic approach to problem-solving. These experiences shaped not only my career progression into Staff-level Data Science roles but also my approach to mentorship. I understand how overwhelming it can feel to break into the industry or advance to the next level, and I want to help others navigate that journey with greater clarity, confidence, and direction.

What do mentees usually come to you for?

Most mentees come to me for help with breaking into Data Science, preparing for interviews at top technology companies, or advancing from mid-level positions into Senior and Staff Data Scientist roles. A significant part of my mentorship focuses on technical interview preparation, including SQL, Python, statistics, machine learning, experimentation, causal inference, and product analytics case studies. I also work with mentees on resume optimization, behavioral interviews, and developing the strategic thinking and communication skills needed to succeed in senior-level roles. Having navigated rigorous interview processes myself, I understand what companies look for and how important it is to demonstrate not just technical knowledge but also structured problem-solving and business judgment. My mentorship approach is highly personalized and hands-on. I typically begin by understanding each mentee's background, career aspirations, strengths, and areas for improvement. From there, we develop a structured preparation plan with clear milestones, targeted practice, and regular feedback. Depending on their goals, our sessions might involve realistic mock interviews, solving complex analytical case studies, reviewing technical concepts, or discussing how to communicate project impact effectively. I place particular emphasis on helping mentees think independently rather than simply memorizing solutions. My goal is to ensure that every mentee leaves our sessions with greater confidence, stronger problem-solving skills, and a clear understanding of what they need to do next. Ultimately, I want to equip them with skills that extend well beyond their next interview and contribute to their long-term career growth.

What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a mentor is seeing someone transform from feeling overwhelmed by the Data Science interview process to approaching complex problems with confidence and clarity. A particularly meaningful part of my mentorship experience has been working with candidates who possess strong technical foundations but struggle to translate their knowledge into compelling interview responses. Often, the challenge isn't a lack of ability but rather understanding how to structure their thinking, communicate trade-offs, and demonstrate the business impact of their decisions. What I find most fulfilling is witnessing that shift in mindset through our mentoring sessions. Whether we're working through a challenging experimentation case study, refining an approach to a machine learning problem, or practicing a behavioral interview, I love seeing mentees progress from looking for the "right answer" to confidently explaining their reasoning and defending their decisions. These moments reinforce why I became a mentor in the first place. For me, mentorship success isn't measured solely by whether someone lands a job at a prestigious company, but also by the lasting confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills they develop along the way. Knowing that I can contribute to someone's professional growth is incredibly rewarding.

What are you getting out of being a mentor?

Being a mentor has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my professional journey, both personally and professionally. While I initially started mentoring to share my knowledge and help others navigate the challenges of building a career in Data Science, I've discovered that mentorship is very much a two-way learning experience. Every mentee brings a unique background, perspective, and set of challenges, which constantly pushes me to rethink how I approach problems and communicate complex concepts. Explaining topics like machine learning, experimentation, and causal inference in a way that is intuitive and actionable has strengthened my own technical understanding and made me a more effective communicator. Mentoring has also had a meaningful impact on my leadership skills as a Staff Data Scientist. It has taught me to become a better listener, ask more thoughtful questions, provide constructive feedback, and adapt my coaching style to different individuals. These are skills that translate directly into collaborating with cross-functional teams, influencing stakeholders, and developing other data scientists in the workplace. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect, however, is the personal satisfaction of seeing mentees grow in confidence and make progress toward their career goals. Their curiosity and determination continually inspire me to keep learning and improving. Ultimately, mentoring has reinforced my belief that professional success isn't just about individual accomplishments, but also about the positive impact we can have on the careers and lives of others.
