Machine learning engineer & scientist with 8+ years experience building statistical/probabilistic models to solve applied scientific problems. At Afresh, I help develop demand forecasting & recommendation models to help grocery stores order intelligently & reduce food waste.
I received my Ph.D. in Computational Biology from UC Berkeley, where I developed models for using large genomic datasets to infer, for example, how complex diseases have evolved through time. I am especially proud of my mentorship and teaching accomplishments: I received the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award in Statistics, and mentored multiple undergraduates who next went on to top positions in industry (Amgen) and academia (UC Berkeley Ph.D.).
My approach to problems is "measure twice, cut once": I like to first explore the problem scientifically with both empirical data and lightweight models. Then, once I have a solid intuition for how the data/system behaves, I design and build a solution that fits the needs (e.g., prediction, interpretation, etc), is robust to data idiosyncrasies. I also pride myself on effectively communicating quantitative results across functional groups.
Mentees who work with a mentor for 3+ months reach their goals 2x faster than those going it alone. Long-term mentorship means fewer false starts, more focused sessions, and support that builds week after week.

What's included in the trial?
Every trial is a little different–here's what Aaron says about their trial:
We'll meet for a quick call (usually under 30 minutes) where we:
- Break the ice and introduce ourselves
- Discuss your goals and how I can support you
- Coordinate logistics like time zones, meeting frequency, and communication methods
