About this session

A structured review of something you haven't finished yet — level layouts, a design document, a systems breakdown, or a build in progress. Most of the work happens before we meet. I go through what you send, work out where the design is doing what you think it's doing and where it isn't, and build the analysis out properly. The session is where I walk you through it and we work the problems together.

The most useful thing you can do is tell me what you want feedback on. That might be a single thing — the pacing of one level, whether a progression reads clearly to a new player — or a few related things you've been going back and forth on. Either is fine. What makes the difference is specificity: "does this level teach the player what they need before the difficulty steps up" gets you a much sharper read than "what do you think." Send the material that bears on what you've named, and if it looks like more than we can do justice to in one session, I'll tell you before you book.

Afterwards you get a single reference document, usually a day or two later: the analysis, the annotated material, and a short record of what we decided at the top. Not a transcript — something you can build from.

Your mentor

I've spent three decades in the games industry shipping titles across nearly every platform and genre — from one of the first internet-based multiplayer games to NBA-licensed console titles to massively multiplayer online games. I've done it as a designer, a producer, a creative director, and as a founder who self-published the first PS3 game on the PlayStation Network.

Along the way I've built and mentored design teams, written hundreds of design specs, shipped fourteen titles, and navigated the full arc of this industry — from early online gaming through the mobile era and into live service. I've worked with major licensors (NBA, LucasArts), led F2P and LiveOps design, and run my own studio from scratch.

I mentor both hands-on — reviewing your actual design docs, specs, and prototypes — and strategically, helping you think through career moves, team dynamics, and how to grow into leadership. Whatever you're working through, I've probably been there.

First, Kevin has demonstrated a very high level of professionalism in both game design and game development. His advice is practical, well-structured, and clearly based on extensive industry experience. Second, what impresses us most is his mentoring style. Rather than giving Julian the answers, Kevin consistently asks thoughtful questions that encourage him to think critically, explain his reasoning, and make his own design decisions. This has helped Julian develop confidence and think more like a game designer rather than simply following instructions. Third, Kevin is always exceptionally well prepared. Before each session, he creates clear and well-organized materials that guide the discussion. After each meeting, he provides detailed notes, summarizes the key decisions, and assigns focused, achievable tasks for the next session. He also gives professional feedback on Julian's work, highlighting both the strengths of his ideas and the areas worth exploring further. Overall, Kevin has created a very structured and supportive learning environment. Julian genuinely enjoys the sessions, stays motivated between meetings, and has already shown noticeable growth in his game design thinking. We are very pleased with the progress so far and look forward to continuing working with Kevin. One additional strength I'd like to mention is Kevin's excellent sense of scope management. He consistently helps Julian focus on building one small, playable piece at a time instead of trying to design the entire game at once. This has been extremely valuable in keeping the project realistic and maintaining Julian's motivation.”
