Kateryna Furtak – Meet the Mentor

I'm Kateryna, a Ukrainian entrepreneur now based in Spain. Over the past 12 years, I've co-founded four companies: Seven Figure Club (a founders' community), Mydutyfree (a duty-free marketplace), Open Innovation Studio (startup–corporate connector), and Dressboom (a fashion-swap platform). I'm currently focused on real estate and mentoring early-stage founders.

Why did you decide to become a mentor?

I decided to try mentoring around two years ago, when I finally had some time to breathe after several intense years at Unstoppable Domains—a company that grew from a tiny startup into a unicorn. I thought I could use my experience to help early-stage entrepreneurs navigate the many obstacles that come with building something from scratch. I was surprised to see how many people get stuck right at the beginning, simply because they're overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done and don’t know where to start. For me, this is a great playground—I enjoy "putting things on the shelves" and bringing clarity to chaos.

How did you get your career start?

I started my professional journey at a travel agency, where I learned that with a bit of creativity, there’s always a way to solve a problem. That’s also when I discovered that “no” is just the beginning of a conversation. My first boss, who taught me that through his own example, has remained a role model for me in many areas of life. Later, I entered the corporate world, working on large construction projects. That experience ultimately pushed me toward entrepreneurship—I found it difficult to tolerate inefficiency and endless loops of decision-making. In 2013, I shifted into tech startups and have since worked on products across fashion, travel retail, web3, and community spaces. I’ve had two partial exits, and one of the companies is still operating in Europe.

What do mentees usually come to you for?

I’m most helpful to early-stage tech entrepreneurs—or those aspiring to become one. These are often people working in big companies who feel fed up with corporate culture, or students who already know they want to build companies instead of becoming job seekers. Sometimes, my mentees come from traditional business backgrounds and are now looking to build a tech company or disrupt an old-school industry. The common challenge they face is feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to start or how to turn their idea into something real. I help them create a clear path forward—with an action plan, key metrics, and a solid understanding of how to transform their ideas into a business. Based on my experience mentoring founders, I’ve created a new package that delivers quick and tangible results. It’s called Personalized Startup Framework with Action Items and Resources. It’s designed for those who prefer intensive learning and want to see progress fast.

What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?

Most of my mentorship experiences have been very positive. I especially enjoyed working with a young guy who was determined not only to change his professional path but also to improve his financial well-being. It was incredibly rewarding to see how quickly he took control of his finances and was finally able to launch the dream project he’d been thinking about for over a year. I also had a great experience mentoring a girl who had just been appointed head of a department for the first time and was stepping into a leadership role with no prior team management experience. It was fulfilling to see the relief and confidence she gained as my guidance helped her resolve internal challenges and navigate her new position. Another highlight was working with a Singaporean student who had a brilliant startup idea and was moving at an impressive pace. Our sessions were very intensive, and it was exciting to see her making rapid progress.

What are you getting out of being a mentor?

First of all, I get a serotonin boost 😄 Almost after every session—though I might be tired—I feel energized, like after a good run. It’s especially satisfying to see the results of the energy I invest in people. Second, I gain new and interesting connections. Third, working with mentees stimulates my own creativity. I've noticed that new ideas come to me more often—it really keeps my mind active and inspired.
