I didn't go to university. I learned through apprenticeships and online courses, and I started MentorCruise after watching my peers spend $20,000 on bootcamps without landing jobs. So I have no interest in telling you credentials are worthless. Some of them open doors that stay shut without them. What I'm interested in is that this market sells all of them with the same pitch, whether the issuer can enforce anything or not.
We run a few hundred certification pages on MentorCruise, one for each technology people come to us wanting to get certified in. Reading across them, the pattern isn't that some certifications are good and some are bad. It's that they come out of four completely different kinds of market, and advice that is correct in one of them is actively wrong in another.
The short version
- The useful question isn't which certification is best. It's who issues it, and what they can make it mean to somebody else.
- Three questions decide it, in this order: who issues it and do they control the thing being certified, what does it actually gate, and what does it not prove.
- Those questions sort you into one of four situations. Where a vendor owns the platform, buy the credential. Where nobody owns the language, mostly don't. Where the certificate is a door policy, buy it and know that's what it is. Where the field hasn't converged, treat every option as training.
- The four are not a ranking. They are four market structures, and a credential's standing in one tells you nothing about another.
- The answer to the third question is identical in all four: no exam proves judgment under production conditions. That isn't a criticism of certifications. It's a description of what an exam has to be.
Why "best certification" lists can't answer this
Ranked lists fail this question because they rank objects that aren't comparable. A vendor exam written by the company that builds the software and a course completion certificate from a teaching platform end up at numbers three and four on the same list, as if the only difference between them were quality. The real difference is that one issuer can make an employer care and the other cannot.
A ranking assumes there is one axis of value and every credential sits somewhere on it. There isn't one. What varies between two certifications is not mostly their difficulty, their price or the quality of their study material. It's the issuer's power. HashiCorp can define what competence in Terraform means because HashiCorp writes Terraform. A training company selling a Go certificate is offering an opinion about someone else's language, and the market prices that opinion accordingly.

Look at what's on offer for Go and it's course specializations from teaching platforms, because there is no vendor exam to list. I should be straight about my own position here. MentorCruise sells mentorship, which is one of the things those lists sometimes rank. That is exactly why I'm not writing a ranking. What follows is a test you can run yourself, on a credential I've never heard of, without me.
The three questions that decide it
Three questions, asked in this order, will tell you what a credential is worth in your situation. The order matters. Question one tells you whether anyone stands behind it, question two tells you what it opens, and question three tells you the limit that applies no matter how the first two came out. Fifteen minutes on the issuer's own website answers all three.
1. Who issues it, and do they control the thing being certified?
Start with the issuer, not the syllabus. A company that builds the technology can define what competence in it means and make employers treat the certificate as evidence. A third party certifying somebody else's language is publishing an opinion. Both produce a PDF with your name on it. Only one of them is backed by an organization with the standing to enforce what it says.
The clear cases are clear. HashiCorp publishes Terraform certifications and HashiCorp builds Terraform. Red Hat runs a certification program and Red Hat owns Ansible. In both cases the organization writing the exam is the organization writing the software, which means it can say what counts as knowing it, and nobody is in a position to argue.
Then look at Go. Go's own learning page offers the language specification, the user manual, Effective Go and a set of tutorials. It does not offer a certification. Rust is the same story: the Rust learning page points you at the book, Rust by Example and Rustlings, and no exam. Every Go or Rust credential on the market is therefore somebody else's product, sold about a language its issuer does not control. That is question one answered in a single line, and it is most of what you needed to know.
Control is not always binary, and the question is diagnostic rather than a checkbox. Confluent certifies against Apache Kafka. Confluent was founded by the people who created Kafka and it sells the main commercial platform built around it, so it carries real authority. But Kafka is an Apache project and Confluent does not govern it. That's a lot of enforcement power and not total enforcement power, and noticing the difference is the point of asking rather than assuming.
The last thing on question one is the one that catches people, including me. Check the issuer's own site rather than trusting what you already believe, because this market moves. PyTorch now has an official certification, the PyTorch Certified Associate, published by PyTorch and delivered through Linux Foundation Training. Not long ago the honest answer for PyTorch was that no official exam existed. If your picture of which technologies have official credentials is more than a year old, it's wrong somewhere, and you won't know where until you look.
2. What does it actually gate?
A credential is worth something when it opens a specific door that stays shut without it. So name the door. A partner tier, a procurement requirement, a filter in an applicant tracking system, a clause in a contract. If you cannot name one, the honest answer is that it gates nothing, and you can still decide to buy it as long as you know that's the purchase you're making.
Google Ads is the cleanest gate in this entire market, and Google publishes the mechanism rather than leaving you to guess. Certifications are one of three requirement categories a company has to satisfy to hold a Google Partner badge, and a minimum share of an agency's account strategists have to be certified, with coverage across the product areas where the agency actually spends. Google's certification page states plainly which certifications count toward that badge and which do not.
Read that as a mechanism rather than as praise. Your certificate is a component of your employer's badge. That's why agencies pay for it, why it appears in job listings, and why it will keep appearing there regardless of what anyone thinks about certification generally. It's also why the gate is real without being a statement about how good you are.
Gates can also live in the issuer's own admission rules. ISC2 will not issue a CISSP on an exam result by itself. It requires documented paid work experience in the relevant domains. That's an issuer refusing to let its own exam stand in for the work, which is unusual in this market, and it is a large part of why the credential carries what it carries.
For most credentials, though, question two comes back empty, and that is a legitimate answer rather than a failure. Buying a syllabus is a reasonable purchase. Structured study with a deadline attached is a real thing to want, and plenty of people get value from exactly that. The damage happens when someone buys a syllabus while believing they bought a key.
One shortcut. Be suspicious of the phrase "industry recognized" wherever it appears without an object. Recognized by whom, and enforced how? If the page selling it cannot answer that, question two has already been answered for you.
3. What does it not prove?
Every credential in this market shares one limit, including the ones issued by companies with total control over their own technology. An exam can test whether you know what a tool does. It cannot test what you'd do at 2am when the tool tells you something that isn't true. That's judgment under production conditions, and no issuer has found a way to certify it.
This isn't a slogan and it isn't a knock on exams. It's structural, and you can see why from the first two questions. HashiCorp can guarantee its exam covers Terraform accurately, because HashiCorp writes Terraform. What it cannot do is guarantee you'll read a plan and notice that the change you're about to apply replaces a resource rather than updating it. The first is a knowledge question with an answer that's correct in every company on earth. The second depends entirely on what that resource is inside yours.
Same shape on the business side. Google can be confident that a certified strategist knows what the product does, because Google built the product and wrote the exam. Google cannot make that strategist tell a client to stop spending on a campaign that isn't working. The certification covers the part that is the same everywhere. The hard part is the part that isn't.
That's the trade an exam has to make to be an exam. It has to be gradeable at scale, which means its answers have to be right in every context. Judgment is precisely the part that changes with context, so it's the part the format has to exclude. Nobody is hiding this from you. It just doesn't get said on the page selling the course. Which is why question three returns the same answer in all four situations below, and why it's the only thing constant across them.
Which of these four situations are you in?
Four different market structures produce four different answers, and knowing which one you're standing in is most of the decision. This is not a ranking. A vendor credential is not better than a business credential. It's a different kind of object with a different failure mode. Find the description that matches your situation, then run the three questions on the specific credential you were about to pay for.
The issuer builds the thing you'd be certified in
This is DevOps and platform tooling, and it's the situation where credentials behave the way the marketing says they do. The issuer writes the software, defines competence in it, and often runs a partner program that turns your certificate into something its customers need. Question one and question two both come back with real answers.
How you know you're here. The technology has a company name attached to it, that company sells support contracts for it, and it runs a partner program. Terraform is HashiCorp's. Ansible is Red Hat's. If you can name the vendor and the vendor has a partner tier, you're in this situation.
The answer, in short. Yes, and the work is picking which one. These are credentials with enforcement behind them, and they're the ones most likely to be paid for by an employer, because the employer often needs certified people on staff for its own partner status.
The wrinkle worth checking. Some things in this bucket are practices rather than products. Nobody owns site reliability engineering or DevSecOps the way HashiCorp owns Terraform, so those credentials come from training organizations, cloud vendors and standards bodies instead of from the vendor of a thing. Run question one on the specific credential rather than assuming the situation covers everything filed under it.

Nobody owns the language
This is programming languages and frameworks, and it's the situation where the certification market is selling something its issuers have no standing to sell. When the language is published by a foundation or an open project rather than a vendor, there's usually nobody in a position to issue an authoritative exam, so third parties fill the gap and employers discount them.
How you know you're here. The thing you want certified is a language, a framework or a job description rather than a product with a vendor behind it. The test is one search: does the organization that publishes the language also publish an exam?
The answer, in short. Mostly no. For most languages every option is third-party, and your code does the job the certificate was supposed to do.
The exceptions are real, and this is the situation where checking matters most. PyTorch has an official certification now, published by PyTorch itself. Assuming otherwise, as I would have done a year ago, means giving somebody advice that's confidently wrong. "Mostly no" is the honest verdict here. "None" is not, and the difference is a real credential that a real reader may already hold.

The certificate is a door policy
This is business and vendor tooling, and it's the situation where the gate is usually real and the inference people draw from it is usually generous. Somebody else has decided the credential is required. That decision is worth taking seriously as a requirement. It is worth taking much less seriously as evidence about the person holding it.
How you know you're here. Somebody other than you is doing the checking. The credential shows up on a form, a partner requirement, a procurement questionnaire or a recruiter's filter before it shows up in any conversation about the actual work.
The answer, in short. Often table stakes, and they prove less than the person buying them expects. Question two comes back with a genuine answer, which is why these are worth having. Question three comes back the same as everywhere else, which is why having one settles less than it appears to.
The specific trap. The distance between "this is required" and "this is evidence" is wider here than in any of the other three situations, and this is where people most reliably mistake the first for the second. A partner program requiring certified headcount is making a statement about its own program design. It is not making a statement about you.

The field hasn't picked a credential yet
This is emerging fields, and it's the situation where the market has not converged on anything. No issuer has enough standing to make its certificate the one that counts, so what's on sale is training with a certificate attached. That can be a fine thing to buy. It is not proof of anything, and nobody in the market is currently able to make it proof.
How you know you're here. Look at the options list. If it's a dozen course specializations and university certificates from a dozen different issuers, with no two syllabuses agreeing on what the field even contains, that's what non-convergence looks like from the outside. Compare it against the Terraform list, where the credentials that matter trace back to one company.
The answer, in short. Treat every option as training rather than as a signal. Buy it if you want the structure, the deadline or the syllabus. Don't buy it expecting a hiring manager to recognize it, because there's no reason they would.

A last word on the four. They are not four grades. Emerging fields are not a worse place to be than platform tooling, they're a younger market with a different structure, and the credential advice that's correct in one is wrong in the other. That's the whole reason a single ranked list can't answer this question.
What to do once you know
Run the three questions on the specific credential rather than on the category, and run them before you pay. Question one is five minutes on the issuer's own website. Question two is a search of the vendor's partner requirements and of job listings that name the credential. Question three is already answered, and it's the reason the certificate is never the whole plan no matter which situation you're in.
Question one, on the issuer's site. Not a listicle, not a training provider's landing page, not a summary of what someone remembers being true. Go to the organization that publishes the technology and see whether it publishes an exam. That single check would have caught most of the bad certification advice I've read this year.
Question two, by naming the door. Search the vendor's partner program requirements. Then search job listings for the exact name of the credential and look at whether it appears as a requirement or as a nice-to-have. If neither search produces a door, you're buying a syllabus. Decide whether you want one.
If your employer is paying, question two is mostly answered already, and it's answered in their interest as well as yours. Take it. The calculation genuinely is different when it isn't your money, and it's fine for it to be different. Ask them what the certificate is for, because they usually have a specific reason and the reason is usually a requirement they have to meet.
Then the part that doesn't change. Three of the four situations above end with you buying something that has nothing to do with us, and one of them ends with you buying nothing at all. That's what the test actually outputs, and if I bent it so that every road led to a mentor you'd be right to stop trusting the rest of it.
What is constant across all four is question three. Nobody issues a credential for judgment under production conditions, because nobody has worked out how to grade it. The way people have always picked it up is by working alongside someone who already has it and being told when they're wrong, early, while being wrong is still cheap. That's what a mentor is for. Note what that does not say. It isn't "get the certification with a mentor," and in two of the four situations the certificate isn't the thing I'd spend on at all. It's that the gap the exam leaves is the same gap in every situation, and it closes the same way whether you end up buying a credential or not.

Are certifications actually worth it?
It depends which of the four situations you're in, and that's a real answer rather than a dodge. Where the issuer builds the technology and runs a partner program, the certificate buys access to something concrete and often gets paid for by an employer. Where nobody owns the language, it mostly buys you a syllabus. Work out which market you're standing in before you argue about whether the price is fair.
Do employers actually care about certifications?
Some employers care a great deal, for reasons that have very little to do with your competence. An agency chasing a Google Partner badge needs a share of its account strategists certified, so it cares about your certificate the way it cares about any other requirement it has to satisfy. That's genuine demand and it's worth understanding correctly: it's demand for a component, not admiration for a skill.
Should I get a certification or a degree?
Compare them on what each one gates rather than on prestige, because they fail in different ways. A degree is a long, expensive, general signal that some employers and some immigration systems require outright. A certification is a short, specific one that a smaller number of partner programs and screening filters require outright. Neither substitutes for work that somebody can look at and assess.
My employer will pay for a certification. Which one should I pick?
Ask them what it's for first, because they usually have a reason and the reason is usually a requirement. If the company needs certified headcount for a partner tier or a client contract, that decides it, and taking the one they need is the right call for both of you. If nobody can name the reason, pick one from the situation where the issuer builds the technology you already work with.
Is there an official certification for Go or Rust?
