About

I help you go from software engineer to senior engineer, architect or technical leader. I've spent 30 years as an engineer and architect, including chief architect roles at Sun Microsystems and Oracle, where I led and developed global teams of more than 1,000 architects and engineers.

How I mentor: we start with where you want to be in 6 to 12 months (passing system design interviews, getting promoted to senior, or moving into architecture) and build a concrete plan together.

- Two 45-minute calls a month. Bring a real problem from your job, or I'll set you a design exercise. You sketch a design, we take it apart together, and you improve it.
- Support between calls. Send me your design docs, architecture decisions or interview answers, and I'll reply within 2 days with specific feedback.
- Mock design reviews and interviews, run the way a review board or interviewer would run them, with honest feedback.

By the end you'll have designs you can show at work or in interviews, and you'll be able to explain and defend your trade-offs.

I keep a small number of mentees so I can give each one proper time. I also help technical founders and first-time CTOs grow into the role.

About me: I was part of Sun Microsystems' original Java Center team, later Chief Java Architect for Greater China and Global Chief Architect for Mobile Financial Services at Sun, then Chief Enterprise Architect at Oracle Greater China. I've worked across 20+ countries and designed core platforms for some of the world's largest banks and insurers. Along the way, I've given more than 3,000 one-to-one technical mentoring sessions. I'm still hands-on: today I'm the founder, chief architect and engineer of an AI-native global trade platform.

I don't keep a public LinkedIn profile because much of my work is confidential. For verification, see my firm profile at yangbros.org/people.html and my engineering activity at github.com/fredyoung007.
