About

I've spent my entire career in video game development. I am currently working for a 3rd person action MOBA called Predecessor (https://www.predecessorgame.com/) Before that, I was at Ubisoft Sofia on Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and its 3rd DLC - Dawn of Ragnarok, and even further back I have also worked with some of biggest game studios on AAA titles including PUBG, Minecraft, Guild Wars 2, Sea of Thieves among others.

I've had a fair share of experience away from traditional game development and in bringing the blockchain/crypto world and gaming closer.

In that time, I've led teams and (sub)products of various sizes and various people. I've taken responsibilities for different aspects of product and team management:
- On the technical side - design and architecture, CI pipelines, automation & testing, code reviews
- On the organisational side - planning & roadmap, JIRA management
- On the people side - hiring people, performance evaluations, 1:1s. Keeping the team spirit high is the one I swear by is the most critical factor for success in any organisation.

I teach many of the introductory programming courses (Intro to Programming, OOP, Data structures) a course on "Design and Architecture of Game Engines and Unreal Engine" in the University of Sofia. Slides for the latter in English are available online at http://nikoladimitroff.github.io/Game-Engine-Architecture/

I enjoy programming in general and I am happy to talk about all of its aspects.

What mentees say

5 out of 5 stars

I have been working with Nikola as a mentee in Unreal Engine 5 for about a year, and the experience has far exceeded my expectations. When we started, my knowledge came mostly from scattered YouTube tutorials. I originally wanted help implementing a handful of features for a passion project. Nikola delivered that and much more. His teaching style builds strong conceptual understanding, not just following his instructions for results. He consistently explains the why behind each decision, from gameplay architecture to blueprint organization and performance considerations. He emphasizes best practices, clean code, and thinking ahead about how future systems will interact with what we build today. That mindset changed how I approach problems. The biggest proof of his impact is what happened when I began adding features on my own. I realized I had the tools to design, troubleshoot, and ship functionality without hand holding or waiting for our next meeting. Nikola’s mentoring gave me confidence, a solid workflow, and habits that I need to scale. On top of that, he is reliable, patient, and clear in his communication. If you want to actually learn UE5, not just follow steps, I strongly recommend working with Nikola.
