About

I work with three kinds of people: engineers who want to actually understand what's happening under the hood (React/JS internals, system design, infrastructure, etc) instead of just pattern-matching it; engineers moving into (or already in) a leadership role and hitting the parts of the job nobody warned them about; and people weighing a non-traditional career pivot who want to think it through with someone who's made a few themselves.

I started programming in 2001, published my first open-source projects in 2003, and have worked professionally as a software engineer since 2009 — including building an OS kernel, compiler, and language runtime from scratch, and later serving as Head of Engineering at OptHealth. One of the things I'm proudest of from that role: mentoring a junior engineer through their first integration project until they could own it solo, then watching them lead the next one unaided. I've also burned out running a team, so I know that side of it too. Along the way I've also run my own SaaS product solo end to end, written a book rebuilding React from scratch, and host The React Show podcast (100k+ downloads).

What I'm best at is tracing a problem back to its actual root cause, whether that's a flaky deploy pipeline, a team that's stuck, or a career decision that feels harder than it should.

In our sessions, we'll start with whatever is actually stuck and work backward until we find what's really causing it. No question is too basic and no problem is too weird.
