At my last team, one backend service had p95 latency around 1.8 seconds during peak traffic, and it was causing timeouts in a user-facing workflow. I traced it to two things: repeated database reads and a very chatty call pattern between services. I added request-level caching for hot reads, introduced a batched endpoint to replace multiple downstream calls, and tightened a few slow queries with better indexing. If it is truly isolated, urgent, or still being validated, I ship the narrow solution first.

What I look at: - Reuse potential, will 2 to 3 teams need this in the next 6 to 12 months? - Standardization value, does a platform approach improve reliability, security, or developer speed? - Time-to-value, will platform work delay an important customer outcome too much? - Learning stage, are we still discovering the right abstraction, or is the pattern already clear? - Migration cost, can a one-off evolve cleanly into a platform later?

A strong answer includes one example where you deliberately chose each path and why.

40. How would you assess whether a new networking feature encourages genuine professional value rather than superficial interactions?

I’d assess it on two levels: leading signals of healthy behavior, and lagging signals of real career value. The key is not just asking, “Did people use it?” but, “Did it help them build useful professional relationships?”

  • Define quality upfront, examples: meaningful replies, saved opportunities, follow-up conversations, repeat engagement.
  • Track depth over volume, fewer but higher-intent interactions often beat lots of low-value clicks or reactions.

At one job, a senior stakeholder asked my team to ship a reporting feature in two weeks because a customer was pressuring them. I knew saying yes would mean cutting QA and delaying a compliance fix that carried real risk.
