Why did you decide to become a mentor?

I chose to become a mentor primarily due to the lack of guidance I faced in my career. My journey in software development was a path of self-discovery and perseverance, often learning through trial and error. This experience, whilst enriching, made me realise the significant impact that a mentor could have made in smoothing out many of those challenges and accelerating career goals. My experience inspired me to be the mentor I wish I had, ensuring others don't have to navigate their careers in isolation.

I strongly believe in the ripple effect of mentorship. By investing time and knowledge into someone, you're not just aiding their personal growth but also contributing to a culture of shared learning and collaboration across the developer community.

How did you get your career start?

My career started with a significant move to the UK, where I began as an IT technician. This role laid the foundation for my understanding of technology and its practical applications. However, it was my growing passion for coding that steered my career towards software development. Faced with challenges like adapting to a new country and navigating a different professional landscape, I saw each obstacle as a chance for growth. This resilience and determination enabled me to quickly make the transition to becoming a senior developer.

During this period of progression, I also explored entrepreneurship, co-founding my own company and serving as the Technical Director.

My evolving skill set and leadership abilities have led me to the role of a development lead, where I can influence and shape project directions while mentoring and guiding a team of talented developers. Every step of my journey, from being an IT technician to becoming a leader in software development, has been a crucial building block in my career.

What do mentees usually come to you for?

Mentees typically come to me seeking guidance and support in various stages of their software development careers. Many are looking to transition into web development, either from a different career path or by restarting their career, with a focus on the Microsoft .NET stack. They often need assistance in acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to secure a job in this dynamic field. My role is to facilitate this transition by providing tailored guidance, resources, and practical advice.

For those already in the industry who are looking to refine their skills, change roles or get promoted, I offer a structured approach to identify and fill skill gaps. This often involves working together on real-world projects, coding challenges, and theoretical concepts, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of web and .NET development.

Mentees can expect a supportive and collaborative environment under my mentorship. From resume building and interview preparation to code reviews and project guidance, I am committed to supporting my mentees in achieving their career objectives.

What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?

One of my most rewarding mentorship experiences occurred when I was tasked with mentoring two apprentices during a crucial project with a tight deadline. Balancing project responsibilities with mentorship was challenging, but seeing them successfully deliver features into production themselves was incredibly gratifying.

Both apprentices thrived, transitioning into junior roles and later being promoted to software engineers. Their journey from apprentices to skilled professionals in the company was fulfilling and stands as a testament to the impact effective mentorship can have on individuals starting their careers in technology.

What are you getting out of being a mentor?

Being a mentor has been incredibly rewarding for both my personal life and career. One of the aspects I cherish most is the opportunity to meet and connect with people from across the globe. Each person brings their own unique background, perspective, and challenges, making the mentorship journey both enlightening and enriching.

My mentoring philosophy is encapsulated in my motto: 'no dev left behind.' This reflects my commitment to ensuring that every mentee receives the support and guidance they need to succeed, regardless of their starting point or the challenges they face.

Mentoring is also a learning experience for me; it helps me improve my leadership skills, stay updated with the latest trends, and continually challenges me to reassess and enhance my understanding. It's a partnership where both the mentor and mentee grow, and this mutual development is what makes it so fulfilling.
