Why did you decide to become a mentor?
Becoming a mentor was a deliberate choice influenced by my career journey and the guidance I received along the way. Early in my career, I was fortunate to have mentors mostly among my colleagues who were genuinely invested in my growth—they not only provided knowledge but also encouraged me to expand my horizons. This positive experience inspired me to give back to the community in the same way. Mentoring has allowed me to refine my leadership skills, stay updated with the latest industry trends, and see things from new and diverse perspectives. It's incredibly rewarding to help others achieve their professional goals and see them grow under my guidance.
How did you get your career start?
I began my IT career as a business analyst at IDS Scheer, a renowned international firm that later merged into Software AG. This position while I was still in university involved tasks like mapping out business processes and implementing enhancements, which provided me with a practical foundation in navigating complex business environments. These early experiences were instrumental in shaping my analytical skills and understanding of detailed system processes.
What do mentees usually come to you for?
Many mentees reach out to me at the very start of their careers, often seeking guidance on how to successfully launch their journey in the IT industry, with a particular interest in business analysis and product management. Others are curious about how to transition from business analysis to product management effectively. My mentorship is more like targeted advisement designed to help them navigate the initial complexities of the IT field. My goal is to empower mentees by building their confidence and equipping them with the necessary tools to excel in their chosen paths.
What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?
One of my most rewarding mentorship experiences involved a mentee who was just starting her career and was uncertain about whether to pursue business analysis or product management. To help her make an informed decision, we explored both career paths in depth. I provided her with detailed information about the skills, real-life applications, and essential tools required for each field. To further enhance her understanding, I gave her real-life business analysis scenarios to practice and helped her apply these skills through additional practical examples. After thoughtful consideration and engaging with these exercises, she confidently chose business analysis as her career path. Watching her gain confidence and clarity in her decision was incredibly gratifying, showcasing the valuable role of mentorship in shaping early career choices.
What are you getting out of being a mentor?
The role of a mentor is incredibly rewarding, as it allows for personal and professional development not just for the mentee but also for the mentor. Engaging with mentees keeps me updated on the latest industry developments and challenges me to maintain my own skills at a high level. This interaction also enhances my leadership capabilities, broadening my perspective and improving my ability to understand and adapt to various professional situations. Additionally, mentoring has boosted my confidence in strategic decision-making and enriched my life by providing a meaningful way to contribute back to the field that has given me so much. Through this fulfilling exchange, I find great joy and satisfaction in seeing another professional thrive and succeed.
