I BELIEVE IN MYSELF
When you believe in yourself, others believe in you too. I know that I am good at what I do, because I’m passionate about it. I’ve done what I do many times & have got amazing results each time. A good leader makes people feel safe. You need to reassure your team that you have what it takes to keep your ship running no matter what obstacles come your way.
Do you believe in yourself? Truly?
Take a moment and ask yourself this question honestly. If you don't truly believe in yourself, how are you going to convince others to believe in you too? Don't worry, this can be worked on through Mentoring. With the right tools and techniques, you'll feel so much more confident and empowered.
I TALK STRATEGY AND THE LANGUAGE OF BUSINESS
Are you communicating the ROI of your Design work? Design is still a business at the end of the day & the work we do, directly impacts the revenue of a business. Knowing how you personally contribute to the overall business profits will set you apart from Designers who don’t talk in business terms
There are so many talented Designers and Researchers out there. Unfortunately, a lot of them don't know how to speak the language of business. As a UX Designer or User Researcher, it's so important to understand that the work you do directly impacts the revenue and profits of any business you work with. You might feel like you're just doing your job, yes you are and you also have superhero capabilities that mean just doing your job has a huge impact on the business you are working for.
Here's another way to think about it.
As a UX Designer or Researcher you will probably be thinking about your personal impact on the people who are using the product you are working on. You can use this same thinking to consider the impact you're having on the business too!
.
I KNOW MY VALUE
I believe in working hard and getting results because I love what I do. I know my work ethic & I’m clear on my strengths. If someone hires me, they will always get value. This is something I’ve always carried throughout my career. It’s so important to know your value personally. It’s also important to know what value you personally bring to a business. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What is your personal USP?
- What makes you unique?
- How do you stand out fron the crowd?
I help my Mentees get total clarity on what makes them unique, by guiding them to map out their qualities.
I KNOW MY WORTH
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of accepting unacceptable environments, pay, workloads etc especially when you are first starting out. When you know your worth, you cannot be taken for granted. You are stronger than you think.
There are so many different types of work environments out there. Some will be good for you, some might not be so great. Getting clear on what environments help you thrive can really help you create a better working life.
Know your worth, know which environments you are willing to spend time in and give your energy to.
I THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
I get interesting ideas all the time. So I honed in on my creative skills to think up new and interesting ways of making myself stand out from the crowd instead of copying & pasting. I think about what makes me unique.
As a UX Designer and Researcher, one of your key qualities to thrive will be to communicate your ideas in a way that’s exciting and engaging. So use your creative skills to help you think outside the box as a way of showing your creative problem solving skills.
I NETWORK
Networking with your people in the industry is a brilliant way to stay inspired, motivated and establish connections. This is the way most people in the industry find out about opportunities. People generally prefer to hire someone they know or have some link to over someone they don’t know at all. It’s about building trust.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Who do I know in my network who may have contacts in the companies I’m interested in working for?
- Which networking events will my potential employers be at?
- How can I build networking online or offline into my routine as a regular habit?
I NEGOTIATE
Negotiating is a positive attribute, if done well. It’s important to understand that most businesses will have a range of pay. They will most likely offer you something lower to begin with. So be confident & know that if you can see you are a strong candidate, then you can negotiate higher on your offer. Just be reasonable with how high you’re going. If you go too high, you’ll put them off. It’s important to know what your strengths are & how they fit into the current market. Be clear on what value you add & what the going rate is for your skills before you go in for interviews
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What are my unique strengths?
- What is the current rate for my level/experience?
- Why should someone pay me more?
And there’s plenty more I did!…
Conclusion
Overall, it’s about getting crystal clear on your unique strengths and knowing your value. These combined will give you the self belief and confidence to help you THRIVE. When you’ve got the right fuel in your tank, you’ll be rocketing sky high! So, remember the power your mind and the power of your very own self belief.
