My life's journey from Accounting Assistant to Head of Finance

I have been thinking for a while about whether to write this article or not. But I believe that my story, which highlights the importance of persistence and ability to choose your own path, may become an inspiration for others. It includes personal opinions and views, so please take what resonates with you and leave the rest.

Lesson No 1: Invest in yourself

When I was a student, I saw the opportunity to enrol in a course that would lead to accreditation as a tour guide. I was fluent in two foreign languages at the time. I had previously done a lot of travelling thanks to my family, and I genuinely loved it. Although the course was very expensive in my situation, I decided to take a risk and sign in after determining the guide's average wage. And I passed it successfully. One month after its completion, I got a job as a guide in the local tourist centre, where I worked for the next 5 years during my studies. And just like the cherry on top of the cake, my first paycheck covered the cost of the course. I still believe that it was the best investment I could have ever made. Not only did I earn significantly more money in the next few years than my classmates, who toiled away in miserable temporary jobs for minimal wages, but it also taught me how to interact with a variety of people, solve stressful situations without blinking an eye, and push myself outside of my comfort zone. So the first lesson's conclusion is to invest in your own development; it will pay off.

Lesson No 2: Think in a long term

I didn't stay in the tourism industry and happily threw myself into the world of HR and finance. My first "proper" job was an Accounting Assistant in a British manufacturing company. The Czech and British way of thinking is very different and I believe that it was my experience in the tourism industry that helped me achieve the impossible in communication, so I quickly became such a link between the two mentalities. Over time, my commitment and expertise caught the attention of the company's senior management. They admired my ability to handle pressure, my meticulous approach to financial matters, and my strong work ethic. I gradually grew professionally in this company and spent 7 years here, where, among other duties, I managed various projects, implemented new accounting software, designed new processes, trained colleagues and represented the company in dealings with clients, authorities and banks. With this lesson, I want to emphasise that you shouldn't reject some tasks just because you don't find them interesting; instead, consider the bigger picture. As a Financial Accountant, I certainly wouldn't have to manage projects, but it moved me further on a leadership level. Always ask yourself, "Is this something that could be useful to know in the future?“ On the other hand, don't be afraid to say "no" if you are highly qualified and the activity is below your pay grade. It's about finding a healthy balance.

Lesson No 3: Don’t get stuck in one place only because it’s comfortable

There's a rule saying when it's the scariest, that's the exact moment you have to jump, otherwise you'll stand still. And that's why, when I had the opportunity to become a Head of Finance in a different company, I took it. And sure, it was frightening because I had already grown to a leadership position, but in a company where I literally knew every screw. Nonetheless, it was the right choice. For the following 3 years, I put together a great team of highly skilled and motivated people, implemented innovative strategies and streamlined processes, resulting in increased efficiency and improved financial performance for the organization. A lack of faith would make none of this feasible. Take chances when it seems right, is my lesson learned from this experience.

Lesson No 4: Learn to sell yourself

Although this topic is connected to both previous sections, I felt it needed to be mentioned separately due to its significance. Statistics show that if you work for the same employer for longer than two years, your lifetime earnings will be reduced by around 50% or more. Therefore, you need to stand out from the crowd and be able to sell it. Don't be humble. Know your value and learn when, how, and where to push for what is rightfully yours. Personally, building relationships and making connections have helped me a lot in this matter.

Lesson No 5: Never stop improving

Over the years, I changed one more job and throughout my journey, I never stopped learning. I pursued additional courses, conferences and development programs, further enhancing my skills and knowledge in finance and management. My dedication to personal growth allowed me to lead my team with confidence and inspire my colleagues to reach their full potential. I believe that effective leadership is about empowering others, fostering a collaborative environment, and promoting continuous learning.

And I'm here, taking a leap again. As a mentor, I can offer invaluable insights gained from my journey. I would emphasize the significance of hard work, dedication, and a thirst for knowledge. I am here to guide you on how to navigate challenges, lead a team, conquer time management, and make critical decisions.

In conclusion, transition from an Accounting Assistant to the Head of Finance is a testament to my hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to personal growth. I hope that by sharing my valuable experiences with others, I may help develop the next generation of leaders who realize the importance of resilience, determination, and lifelong learning. But my journey doesn't stop there. There is a saying that when you are most afraid, it is time to jump. And after considering my long-term goals, I've come to the conclusion that it's time for me to start my own business. I wish to help entire companies as well. Whetever you need streamline processes, enhance communication or just implement best practices, me and my team are here for you. Together, we can explore new possibilities, overcome challenges, and unlock your leadership potential.
