My name is Temidayo Adefioye, and I make a living solving problems. On work days, I enjoy building software, creating technical courses, and writing insightful books. Why did you decide to become a mentor?

There was a time in my career journey where I felt like I had the potential and drive, but lacked the guidance to channel it effectively. I remember the frustration of spinning my wheels, unsure of the best path forward. That experience is what ultimately pushed me towards becoming a mentor. Now, as a mentor, I get the incredible privilege of helping others navigate similar challenges. It's incredibly rewarding to witness that "aha!" moment when someone clarifies their goals, discovers new possibilities, and starts taking action towards their dreams. It's a two-way street too—mentoring keeps me sharp, constantly learning new perspectives and approaches from my mentees. It's a truly enriching experience for both of us.

How did you get your career start?

My career trajectory started with a Microsoft competition back in my school days. The chance to represent my country at the world championship at Microsoft HQ in the US was an incredible experience. But what truly propelled me forward was the guidance of a fantastic mentor I had at the time. He didn't just offer tips on winning the competition; he provided invaluable insights on building a sustainable career in tech. Having that clear direction saved me countless hours of searching and allowed me to channel my energy effectively. This experience solidified for me the transformative power of mentorship, and it's why I'm so passionate about giving back to others on their own career journeys.

What do mentees usually come to you for?

The beauty of mentorship lies in its adaptability. Mentees come to me with a wide range of needs, but a common thread is the desire for direction. Some might feel stuck in their current roles, unsure of the next step. Others may have explored various options and are facing frustration. My approach is all about understanding their unique pain points first. This allows me to tailor a strategy that resonates with their individual background, cultural context, and learning style. One-size-fits-all solutions don't work in mentorship – it's about providing actionable advice that empowers them to navigate their career path effectively. My goal isn't just to offer feedback; it's to equip them with the tools and strategies to achieve sustainable success, a success they can replicate throughout their careers. Think of it as teaching them how to fish, not just giving them a fish.

What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?

It's hard to pick just one favorite story, as each mentorship journey is unique and rewarding. However, one mentee from Mentorcruise in 2022 stands out. He was feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with his career path. I made a conscious effort to provide consistent support and follow-up, patiently guiding them through challenges. Seeing his review mention my professionalism and patience was incredibly heartwarming. It truly emphasizes the importance of creating a safe space for mentees to explore options and navigate obstacles. The fact that he felt satisfied with his progress is what makes mentorship so fulfilling.

What are you getting out of being a mentor?

Being a mentor isn't a one-way street; it's a continuous learning experience for both parties. While I strive to empower my mentees, the process also hones my own leadership skills and strengthens my ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. Every interaction challenges me to see things from different perspectives, fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the diverse challenges faced in the tech industry. But the most rewarding aspect is undoubtedly the impact. Witnessing a mentee gain clarity, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals is truly inspiring. Knowing that I played a role in their success is incredibly fulfilling.
