Hi there, I'm AJ. I'm a founder, executive and advisor who has spent almost two decades working at the forefront of systems change, technology, entrepreneurship and impact. I've built bootstrapped startups and high-growth non-profits and pretty much everything in between. I've learned a lot over the past decade+ about what it takes to be a successful leader, convert a large scale vision into a tangible reality, and how to navigate all of the challenges that come up in the process.
My most recent startup success was Palette Skills, a national upskilling organization focused on helping fast growing companies connect with high potential untapped talent. Started as an idea over lunch, in less than five years, I grew it from a $1M organization to a $250M pan-Canadian operation serving workers from coast to coast.
The common thread through all of my work is a passion for helping others. Finding creative ways to build products that generate both revenue and positive social impact is my sweet spot.
My path didn't start here though. I actually started my career in politics, working as a political aide, trying to solve complex social problems through policy. I loved the experience and it allowed me to get a view of all of the different systems operating across the economy and society and understand how they work together - or don't! When I left I wanted to continue solving important problems, but use business and entrepreneurship to do it.
Leaving one career at my height to jump into a brand new field - one that I have zero experience in - was an emotional rollercoaster. I wasn't prepared for how hard it would be, the mental toll of being a founder, how it would effect my sense of self and the pressure I would face. I went through some real personal challenges in my early days before I found my way forward - things all of us experience but rarely talk about.
That's part of what I can bring as a mentor - someone who can help you work through practical and strategic problems, coach you to be the best version of yourself, and have real talks about the emotional and mental impacts of the work along the way.
