I lead the Search ML team in DoorDash. My team is responsible for end-to-end Search ML of DoorDash, including query understanding, retrieval, ranking and blending.
Before that, I lead the whole page optimization team in Amazon Search. My career began as a research scientist at Xerox PARC, and my interest in books led me to applying ML to Amazon Kindle, where I grew into an engineering leader. Between 2011 and 2015, I was a serial entrepreneur, venturing at the intersection of tech and business. Since 2015, my passion for machine learning has led me back to applying deep learning to recommendation systems at Hulu, Facebook AI, SmartNews, and Amazon Search.
I got my bachelor of engineering degree from Tsinghua University and PhD degree in Machine Learning from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
In my spare time, I enjoy theater performances, Tai Chi and meditation.

5 out of 5 stars
Eric is a great mentor. He taught me how to navigate difficult situations. From him, I learned a great deal about communicating with people, and I realized that dealing with people is far more important than I had previously thought. As an early-career engineer, I often felt lost, running around without direction. Eric shared with me the broader landscape of machine learning, its history, and its future, which helped me form a clearer vision of what I wanted to pursue and how to get there. Most importantly, I used to feel anxious a lot, but I learned from him to view things from a neutral standpoint, which has given me a greater sense of equanimity.
