I have been working in the tech industry for 7+ years and I had great opportunities to find out exactly what I wanted to do. I realised I would do my best work in a management position and set my sights on getting into the role as quickly as possible. I managed to get into the role within 5 years of my career, 3 years after making the decision to begin pursuing it. I won't discount the fact that I was surrounded by smart people and had the opportunities at the right time that enabled me to do it, which is equally important.
