For 9 years between 2009 and 2021 I worked in industry as a Machine Learning Scientist specializing in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Speech Recognition. Five of those years I spent at Amazon improving the Alexa personal assistant. Currently I run a YouTube Channel, A.I. Talks (bit.ly/ai-talks), that explains NLP and Speech systems to everyday people.

While the technical aspects of the systems I developed in industry are interesting, I found I enjoyed teaching NLP to my co-workers so much that I struck out on my own to educate others. In addition to my YouTube channel I tutor and mentor professionally--in 2020, I was a Top 10% Tutor on Wyzant (a popular tutoring platform).

During the 2000’s I was a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University and a postdoc at Oregon Health & Science University. I completed my Bachelor’s in Computer Science, with minors in Math and Physics, from Brigham Young University in 2000.
