About

What's your vision of leadership? Can you describe your leadership approach in one sentence? Without simply listing your responsibilities as an engineering leader, can you capture the core values and behaviours you provide that unlock value in your teams and organization? These aren't straightforward questions -- they require truly understanding yourself!

With 10+ years professional experience as a Software Engineer and 7+ years as an Engineering Manager, I'm an engineering leader that focuses on empathy, trust, and communication. Whether it's 1:1s or coaching, I love listening, asking questions, and helping others to understand their passion and value, so they can take control of their own journey.

I'm probably a good fit if you are:
* A software engineer considering management
* An engineering manager trying to build confidence
* An engineering leader dealing with ambiguity, stakeholders, or team issues
* Job hunting or preparing for interviews
* Thinking about a career move or feeling stuck

Look forward to hearing from you!

What mentees say

5 out of 5 stars

Working with Scott was a pleasure. I began my mentorship in a high-pressure environment, and during the early sessions I often found myself venting about challenges within the company. Scott listened with genuine interest and patience, providing a calm and supportive space to reflect. He helped me step back and see the bigger picture, guiding me towards alternative ways of approaching difficult situations. He also recommended valuable reading and practical exercises, which proved beneficial in the long term. During my mentorship journey, I experienced being downsized. Scott supported me in restructuring my CV and helped me prepare for future interviews, particularly those with a stronger focus on AI. His guidance during this period was both practical and encouraging. Overall, my mentorship with Scott was highly rewarding. Like all meaningful journeys, it eventually came to an end, but the impact of his support and guidance will stay with me.

Scott is patient and an excellent listener. When I reached out, I was in a difficult situation that was hindering me from fulfilling my daily commitments. After patiently listening to my lengthy and unstructured explanation, Scott was able to identify the underlying problem, which was not immediately apparent. He showed me how to better handle the situation and helped me set a few goals to avoid similar issues in the future while also improving my performance in my role. Scott’s ability to understand the situation and pinpoint the root cause was outstanding. I would highly recommend Scott, as he is one of the best mentors.

Scott was my first mentor on here and I found him to be extremely supportive, both helping explore current career related difficulties I was going through as well as keeping an eye to the future about where it is that I want to go and how I could get there. I would highly recommend Scott if you are looking for some support and direction in your career or leadership goals.

I already left one of these but don't mind leaving another since it's asking. Scott was amazing and really helped in answering my questions and clearing away a lot of the uncertainty revolving around moving to a new country. Scott helped me with every aspect from filling out my resume and prepping for my interview, finding an apartment and even what to expect from day to day life in Japan. I can honestly say this process would have been infinitely more stressful without his help and I definitely recommend Scott to anyone who's trying to make a move from the US to Japan.

Finding a job is never easy, even more so when you're looking for a job in a country and culture completely different from your own. I came to Scott seeking guidance on trying to obtain a job in Tokyo Japan. I knew how to search for a job in the United States, however I knew nothing of what to expect of the interview process in Japan or what would be involved post interview for things like finding an apartment, actually getting over there, etc. Scott was an invaluable resource and guided me through every step of the process from resume creation, interviewing with Japanese companies, and even helping with things like locating an apartment, questions about transit, etc. I definitely recommend Scott to anyone who is in a similar situation as his experience and guidance really cleared up a lot of the fog for me and made the process much less painful.
