Why did you decide to become a mentor?

Being a mentor has been an incredibly rewarding aspect of my career. It's not just about sharing my knowledge and experiences, but also about learning from those I mentor. Every individual brings a unique perspective and set of experiences that often challenge my own understanding and push me to grow alongside them. This continuous learning and growth have not only enriched my career but also deepened my passion for marketing. When I first embarked on this journey, my expectations were primarily centered around giving back to the community and helping others navigate the challenges I once faced. However, the experience has far exceeded those initial expectations. The relationships I've built, the progress I've witnessed, and the reciprocal learning that has taken place have been truly fulfilling. Signing up to be a mentor was a decision driven by my desire to make a difference in people's lives. Having navigated the marketing sector and held leadership positions, I felt a responsibility to share my insights and experiences. I wanted to help others avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered and fast-track their success. The joy of seeing someone I mentor achieve their goals is indescribable, and it's what keeps me motivated to continue this journey.

How did you get your career start?

My career start was a journey of self-reliance and continuous learning. Without the guidance of a mentor, I found myself navigating the professional landscape on my own. I began in an entry-level role in a marketing agency, armed with the theoretical knowledge I had gained from my academic studies but with much to learn about the practical aspects of the industry. In those early days, I learned from every task and every project, no matter how small. I made mistakes, but each one was a lesson that helped me grow and improve. I sought out opportunities to expand my skills, taking on challenging assignments and volunteering for projects that were outside my comfort zone. Over time, I gradually worked my way up, moving from entry-level roles to positions of greater responsibility. Each role was a stepping stone, providing me with new insights and experiences. I also made it a point to stay updated with the latest trends and developments in the marketing industry, which helped me adapt and evolve in my career.

What do mentees usually come to you for?

My approach to mentorship is rooted in personalization and practicality. I understand that each mentee comes with unique goals, experiences, and challenges, so I tailor my mentorship to meet their specific needs. Our journey together typically starts with a comprehensive discussion to understand their aspirations, strengths, and areas for improvement. This helps me create a customized roadmap for their growth. Mentees can expect a blend of structured learning and experiential insights. I share relevant theories and concepts, but I also place a strong emphasis on real-world application. I draw from my experiences and use practical examples to illustrate these concepts. This approach not only helps mentees understand the 'what' and 'why' but also the 'how' of implementing these learnings. In terms of support, I provide continuous guidance and feedback. I'm here to answer questions, provide clarity, and help mentees navigate challenges. But more than that, I see my role as a mentor to be a catalyst for their self-discovery and self-improvement. I encourage them to find their own answers and solutions, fostering a sense of independence and confidence. I also provide support in terms of networking and job search, leveraging my industry connections and knowledge to help them find opportunities that align with their career goals. My mentorship is a partnership. It's about working together to unlock the mentee's potential and empower them to achieve their professional and personal goals.

What's been your favourite mentorship success story so far?

One of my most memorable mentorship experiences involves a brilliant young man who was working at a marketing agency but aspired to achieve more. He was talented and driven, but he felt somewhat confined in his current role and yearned for a platform where he could fully utilize his potential. Our mentorship began with a thorough exploration of his aspirations, strengths, and the challenges he was facing. We then embarked on a journey of self-discovery and skill enhancement. We discussed various career paths, from climbing the corporate ladder to venturing into entrepreneurship. We weighed the pros and cons of each option, considering factors like job satisfaction, financial stability, work-life balance, and personal growth. During our sessions, I noticed his entrepreneurial spirit. He had a knack for identifying opportunities and a passion for creating marketing strategies from scratch. This led us to explore the possibility of him starting his own agency. We discussed everything from business planning and client acquisition to team building and financial management. After several months of careful consideration and preparation, he took the leap and started his own marketing agency. It was a challenging journey, filled with uncertainties and setbacks, but he persevered. Today, his agency is thriving, and he's happier than ever. What makes this a favorite success story for me is not just his entrepreneurial success, but the courage he showed in pursuing his dream. His journey from an agency employee to a successful business owner is a testament to the power of mentorship and the potential within each of us to shape our own destiny.

What are you getting out of being a mentor?

Being a mentor has been an enriching experience that has positively impacted various aspects of my life and career. One of the most rewarding aspects is the sense of fulfillment I get from helping others achieve their goals. Seeing mentees grow, overcome challenges, and succeed in their careers brings me immense joy and satisfaction. From a professional standpoint, mentorship has honed my leadership qualities. It has taught me to listen actively, communicate effectively, and empathize deeply. It has also improved my problem-solving skills as I guide mentees through various challenges. These skills have proven invaluable in my own career, enhancing my interactions with colleagues and clients alike. In essence, being a mentor is a two-way street of learning and growth. While I guide my mentees on their journey, their unique experiences and insights also contribute to my personal and professional development. It's a rewarding endeavor that continues to shape my career, leadership, confidence, and life in profound ways.
