One-off sessions with Mike
One-off sessions are a great option if you’re looking for specific advice on a certain topic.
Not sure about your newest design? Not sure if your code is as good as it can be? Portfolio site looking a bit, meh? In this session, a mentor will sit down with you, and give you some inputs to make your work better, be …
In my 26 year career as a full stack developer I have been fortunate to develop websites for a large range of companies including Microsoft, Bank of Scotland, BBC, British Medical Association, Heriot-Watt University and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. I also created websites for ten different agencies of the Scottish Government.
I am passionate about passing on my knowledge, having taught website design at Edinburgh University for three years, published a book about SharePoint and reviewed courses for a online training provider.
Over the past six years I've specialised in front end work and the Angular framework. I can guide you in all the aspects of whichever path you'd like to take:
- Pure HTML, JavaScript and CSS
- Angular HTML, TypeScript and SASS
Personally, I'd recommend a mix of both paths so you are thoroughly equipped in the basics and able to efficiently use the excellent framework.
I would like to give back to the community by mentoring three students. If you are keen to learn then please apply.

Mike was good at the mentor cruise rules. he was professional, good at UI, and accessibility, leaving feedback on work, etc. the bad part was when I asked him on an architectural concept and he didn't know it, so he spent more than 10 mins explaining it's normal to not understand it, which seems like a self-defense, while it just could be IDK. at this point, which was after the first session, I decided not to continue, and asked him to stop it, and I get refunded for the remaining sessions, he said that he didn't do something mentioned at the mentor cruise refund policy. he really didn't, but we are not in the same track of expected knowledge I need in architectural concepts. he refused to refund me, and I had to continue.
Thank you for taking the time to leave the review Tawfiq. From my perspective the "more than 10 minutes" extra I sent online with you after our first session had finished, explaining why I did not know the concept you were referring to, was spent describing that there are no developers out there, no matter how experienced, that know everything about every aspect of web development and how I would always be very honest with you about any of my shortcomings (of which there are many). The more experience I've gained as a developer the more I've realised I still need to learn and this is why I was happy to say that I didn't know of the concept. This is when we discussed how I would always be honest with you, the prevalence of less experienced "Ninja", "Rockstar" and "10x" developers and the user experience (i.e. a user does not care about architectural concepts, they care about the UX). I apologise if any of that came across as defensive, that was certainly not my intention, indeed I was being honest about not knowing the concept when I could easily have fobbed you off by saying we could discuss it in our next session because we had already overrun the end of our session. Despite providing a free one hour session to make sure we were a good match the reason given for the requested refund was that we were "not being fully aligned". We took the time to explore the possibility of a refund together in detail. This was the first time I had to refer to MentorCruise's policy (the "rules") in order to explore the mechanism for a refund. You agreed with me that "none of those specific issues" listed in MentorCruise's refund policy applied to our case and that I "care deeply about mentoring and helping others grow". To this end we mutually agreed to continue the rest of our sessions together and you told me you got a lot from those sessions. As I expressed in our sessions and messages I wish you all the very, very best in your career which I believe you'll be very successful in.
