The Model is an interface defining the data to be displayed or otherwise acted upon in the user interface. The View, on the other hand, is an interface that displays data (the model) and routes user commands (events) to the Presenter to act upon that data.
The Presenter, distinguishing feature of MVP, acts upon the model and the view. It retrieves data from the model, and formats it to display in the view. Microservices architecture, on the other hand, breaks down the application into smaller, loosely coupled services. In essence, while NoSQL offers flexibility and scalability especially with big data, SQL shines when it comes to transactions, joining data across tables, and preserving data consistency and integrity. Designing for high availability and disaster recovery starts with understanding the application requirements, such as Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
On a high level, for high availability, I often follow a multi-tier architecture with redundancy built into every level. The system components are placed on multiple physical machines, often spread across multiple geographical locations. A load balancer is used to distribute the requests across multiple instances of the services, making sure that if one instance goes down, the others keep functioning, providing system availability.
For stateful services like databases, replication (both synchronous and asynchronous) is used. This ensures data availability even in the event of a failure.
For disaster recovery, I design backup mechanisms and ensure that those backups are stored offsite, even in a completely different geographical location. This protects against major disasters like a data center going down.

The Model is concerned with the data and business logic, the View with the user interface and user interactions, and the Controller routes requests between the Model and the View. Each of these concerns operates independently but communicates with others as a whole system.
The benefit of this approach is that it allows for changes or enhancements to be made to one part without affecting others. It makes the system easier to understand, simplifies debugging and testing, and enhances modularity, which, in turn, can lead to increased productivity when developing and maintaining the system.
Creating a user-friendly software architecture starts with understanding the needs and behaviors of the users. It's important to ensure that the system is intuitive, easy-to-use, and solves the user's problems in a way that feels natural to them.
From the architecture standpoint, one way to contribute to this is by ensuring good system performance. A system that performs well and responds quickly to user interactions enhances the overall user experience.

Therefore, active communication and cooperation between different roles are key. It's important to take their inputs into consideration while designing the architecture, as they often have a better understanding of the users.
Ultimately, it's about understanding that architecture serves the user experience, not the other way around. The architecture should enable and support a good user journey, not hinder it.
Agile methodology has been central to most of the projects I have worked on due to its benefits in managing changes, delivering value faster and improving collaboration.
In an Agile environment, the architecture does not have to be fully defined upfront but can evolve over time. This allows the team to start developing faster, get feedback earlier, and adapt the architecture to changing requirements or new insights as they go along.
However, this doesn't mean no upfront design. I found that having a broad, compliant architectural runway at the beginning is important. It sets the direction and provides guidelines to the team, but it leaves room for details to be filled in as we learn more or needs change.
Another factor is that Agile emphasizes a cross-functional team. So as an architect, besides my specialized tasks, I also participate in standard team activities like stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Involving the team in architectural decisions has also been beneficial. Having more viewpoints often leads to better decisions, and it increases the team's understanding and ownership of the architecture.

In a past project building a new feature into an already complex system, we faced a situation where halfway through we found that the design we'd initially planned wasn't feasible due to unforeseen complexity and the risk of it creating instability in the system.
Once we realized this, we swiftly called a meeting among the developers, project managers, and product owners to discuss the situation. We communicated the problem comprehensively and expressed our concerns about continuing with the current approach.

CI/CD is a complex landscape with many tools available, but the bottom line is that it automates what would otherwise be a manual process, frees up valuable developer time, and increases release speed and reliability.
Refactoring a major component entails careful planning. It's not a process to be rushed, especially if the component is critical to the system's functioning.
First, we need to clearly identify what we aim to achieve through the refactoring. This could be an improvement in the component’s maintainability, performance, extensibility, or any other objective. This helps drive the decisions during refactoring and also to communicate them to stakeholders.
Next, refactoring should be treated as a new feature development and included in the project roadmap. It should have allocated resources and follow the regular development cycle with designs, code reviews, testing, etc.
To minimize risk, we should refactor incrementally – breaking it into smaller tasks, working on one piece at a time, and testing it thoroughly. This not only makes it less error-prone but also minimizes disturbance to the rest of the system.

In a project I worked on, we were building a cloud-based analytics platform. Post our initial release, we heard from our users that they loved our features, but found our user interface (UI) quite complex. This feedback was somewhat unexpected as we had focused mainly on feature completeness, assuming that our primarily technical user base would be less concerned about UI simplicity.

I also put a lot of thought into database design, as it can often be a bottleneck when scaling. This includes considerations on sharding or partitioning and indexing strategies.

However, all systems have their limitations and often it's not practical to design for infinite scaling from the start, as it might compromise simplicity and timeline. Prioritizing features starts with understanding the goals of the project and the needs of the users. We work closely with stakeholders and product management to build a feature list that holds business value and aligns with the user's needs.
Once we have a feature list, it's time to prioritize. A common approach here is to use the MoSCoW method: Must have, Should have, Could have, and Won't have. 'Must-have' features are the ones the application cannot function without. 'Should have' are important but not vital. 'Could have' are nice to have if time and resources allow. 'Won't have' are the ones that we plan not to include in the current version but may reconsider for future versions.
In prioritizing, we also consider the dependencies between features. Sometimes a feature high on the list may depend on a lower one. In such cases, the sequence may have to be rearranged.
Another factor to consider is the risk and uncertainty associated with each feature. We might initially prioritize high-risk features to tackle the unknowns sooner rather than later.
Finally, throughout this process, communication and collaboration among all team members — from developers to project managers, to stakeholders — is crucial. Everyone should have an understanding of what is being built, in what order, and why.
Remember that the priorities can change as the project progresses due to unforeseen circumstances or changes in business needs, and that's okay. What matters is continuously reassessing and realigning priorities to adapt and stay on track.
