I've improved Amazon's open source balancing algorithm for Kinesis to support downtime-free rebalancing over thousands of concurrent shards. But you CAN control how you respond when you invariably get things wrong, and I believe the difference between those that go far and those that plateau is whether they are willing to embrace the discomfort, and do the hard work of self-improvement.
