I’m a software engineering leader with over 25 years of experience developing innovative solutions in both corporate and startup environments. I’ve personally architected, deployed and maintained production services utilizing much of AWS, built out the CI/CD infrastructure and scaled out the team to build on it. I have a thorough understanding of the software development lifecycle, and throughout my career, I’ve been a part of, worked closely with, or managed teams on the front-end, backend, QA, Ops and Security. A believer in a DevOps culture, I’m always looking for ways to help teams work more efficiently.

I can help you achieve your goals by guiding you in many aspects of software engineering including:

- Software Development Life Cycle
- Team Management Advice (local/remote/hybrid)
- Resume Review and Career Advice
- Defining Requirements and Roadmapping
- Software Architecture Design
- Coding Standards and Practices
- System Performance, Scalability, Reliability
- Security and Compliance
- Agile Best Practices
- DevOps

I came to James after starting a new job at a company, as a Senior Software Engineer role. The team I came onto was fairly new but the company was around for 20 years and I wanted guidance how to manage the complex web of relationships to help myself and this new team succeed. Throughout the months we worked together, he gave me actionable advice on how to work with my managers, teammates, and members of other teams to move projects forward - which is rare for me. I have worked with very few people that have seen the type of situations I've been as often as he has. Virtually every situation I was in, he had seen some flavor of it before and was able to share his experience and opinion. James is a great mentor and I highly recommend him to senior engineers to deliver successful products that require complex collaboration.

I had the pleasure of studying under James for over six months, during a particularly crucial stage in my development as a software engineer. He was an integral part of my transition from graduating to entering the workforce as a full-stack engineer. His knowledge of the software development life cycle, system architecture and implementation best practices, the nuances of discerning business vs application logic, and common workflows (Git, Agile, etc.) is second to none. That is a very much non-exhaustive list :-) Without the tutelage of James, I feel confident I would be finding much less success in my career. A commonly shared sentiment is that technical skills can be taught to anyone with passion and drive, but teaching interpersonal skills is much harder to achieve. James does both with masterful skill, providing a wealth of industry knowledge, and giving his mentees a top-class example to emulate in both professionalism and humility. James always went above and beyond for me, meeting with me outside of our scheduled hours when needed, taking time out of his day to work through blockers with me or do review code, and was always prompt to respond to my messages, all of this while navigating the difficulties of operating in different time zones from one another. Whether you are trying to break into the tech industry, elevate your existing career to the next level, or want to obtain a deeper understanding of programming and software development from start to finish, James is the mentor for you.

I cannot reiterate this enough - James is a phenomenal mentor. Extremely knowledgable, patient, and willing to go the extra mile for his mentees. As I progress through my software engineering immersive he has been an invaluable asset and has even accommodated my schedule change to have our sessions an hour earlier in the morning (We are also in different time zones). He is exceptionally organized, exceedingly well versed in many industry topics, and can seamlessly switch gears to explain whatever topic you may inquire about in detail. The aforementioned compounded with his punctuality and responsiveness; if your desire is to exponentially elevate your engineering career and pursue deep technical understanding - James is absolutely the mentor for you.
